Over 850 students from San Francisco and Marin County schools converged on Ocean Beach on May 20th to protect their watershed, Bay, beach, and Ocean. In school programs and assemblies helped students in grades 1-7 understand their place in the watershed, how important it is to protect these places and their own impact on the marine environment no matter where they live.
After cleaning the beach, the children sent the public a message about the need to protect the world’s ocean. The photo depicts a Western Grebe diving after a fish. Western Grebe populations have been in decline and are at risk of entanglement by discarded fishing line and abandoned fishing gear. Loss of forage fish is also hurting these birds. San Francisco’s event was organized by Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary and sponsored by the California Coastal Commission with support from the Whale Tail License Plate Fund. Five other similar cleanups are taking place up and down the California coast.
We have only ONE OCEAN. Everything that happens in our part of the Ocean effects other areas and vice versa.
